Thun

Thun occupies an admirable site on the shores of Lake Thun with beautiful views of the peaks of the Bernese Alps, such as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and, closer at hand, the giant pyramidal Niesen and the flat-topped Stockhorn. Thun (pronounced “Toon”) is one of the most original towns in Switzerland and is much overlooked by visitors pressing on to Interlaken. With its picturesque castle and quaint medieval centre, Thun is well worth a visit and in fact has been very much commended by famous visitors such as the poets Goethe, Rilke or Kleist. At the beginning of the 19th century, with the construction of several hotels and with the first steamers cruising on Lake Thun, Thun became a major tourism destination.

Situated within green mountains and snowy summits, Lake Thun is one of the loveliest and largest lakes in Switzerland offering many opportunities for watersports. In addition, a well-documented network of walking paths along the shores and above the villages in the foothills invite for activities such as hiking and mountain biking. Thun, the gate to the Bernese Oberland offers several attractions within city limits, and is an excellent base for daily excursions to numerous sights around Lake Thun, the Jungfrau Region and the Simmental Valley.
